On to the detailed reading materialThe stretch of a scalp hair that today stands just above the surface was put together several weeks ago. Whatever biochemistry went into it happened during that time — below the surface, inside a narrow channel a few millimeters long.
That channel holds two things at once: a cluster of rapidly dividing cells that keeps delivering fresh material, and a sleeve that dictates the shape of the strand taking form inside it. Both parts are made of protein, and both are rebuilt within a matter of days.
Enzymes that carry particular trace elements locked into their structure take part in this work. For selenium, the European Commission — after review by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) — has cleared exactly one wording that touches on this subject area. Allanitium places it alongside unchanged, with no embellishment.
Selenium does not reach its place of work as a free ion. The body first builds it into an amino acid of its own and adds that unit at one precisely fixed position while a protein chain is being assembled. What comes out is a limited number of proteins known in technical language as selenoproteins. Several of them have been described for tissues with a high turnover of cells.

A second, self-contained cell sleeve wraps itself around the strand as it forms. It contains a protein called trichohyalin, which the enzyme transglutaminase 3 cross-links in the presence of calcium. Firm bonds arise in the process between the glutamine and lysine residues of neighboring chains. This sleeve sets earlier than its contents, hands the softer strand inside it the cross section it will keep, and comes apart again further up.
The wording names one mineral, one tissue and a single noun: maintenance. What is meant is the ordinary condition, for as long as the diet as a whole leaves nothing out, and not any change to that condition. None of the proteins named on this page turns up in that sentence; they belong to the scientific background, not to the authorized text.
Mood, sleep and concentration are subject areas of their own, each with its own review procedure. They do not belong to the sentence quoted here, and for that reason these pages do not take them up either. Allanitium stays with the one tissue for which a wording exists.
The two examples below come from basic biochemical research. They explain why selenium is looked at in tissues that renew themselves quickly in the first place — and they are expressly no part of the authorized wording.
Among the selenoproteins there is one whose task can be sketched comparatively vividly: methionine sulfoxide reductase B1. The amino acid methionine is easily altered chemically, and it does so in two mirror-image variants. The enzyme just named returns one of those two variants to its starting state. This has been described, among other places, for methionine residues in actin — the scaffold protein that gives a cell its shape and keeps it mobile while it is being rebuilt.
Selenoprotein W ranks among the smallest members of this group. Its three-dimensional fold resembles that of thioredoxin, a carrier molecule for electron transfers between proteins. The specialist literature describes it for numerous tissues, and its quantity follows the selenium supply more visibly than it does for some other members of its family.
Both descriptions belong to the background and not to the legal text. The sentence cleared by the European Union reads, unchanged: “Selenium contributes to the maintenance of normal hair” — EU-authorized wording · Regulation (EU) No 432/2012. It says no more than that, and no more than that is made of it here.
